In Memoriam - Alasdair Gillies

(December 6, 1963 - August 27, 2011)

Alasdair Gullies
Alasdair Gillies died suddenly on August 27, 2011 in Ullapool, Scotland. He was one of the very best Scottish pipers in recorded history, and it is unlikely that his competitive achievements will be equaled in our lifetime. We were very privileged to have had the opportunity to study with him, work with him, and get to know him as a delightful, fun-loving friend who was widely known for his generous sharing of piping knowledge. His sudden passing leaves the students and staff of the Balmoral School of Piping shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of such a wonderful person, loved by many of us in Pittsburgh and around the world.

We are planning a memorial event for Alasdair this Fall. Send us an email if you would like to be notified once the arrangements have been finalized.

Links to several obituaries of Alasdair are included in the Balmoral School newsletter.

In Sorrow,
George Balderose
